Need a romantic visit to someplace where you can fall in love? Well you can never miss the Venice of East. Yes, Udaipur is also known as Venice of East. With this, Udaipur also has many more names like Kashmir of Rajasthan and White city. Most of the names are related to the large number of lakes that Udaipur has and how so many of them are actually natural and not man-made. You can never miss the beautiful landscapes, breathtaking views and obviously the lakes. The name ‘White City’ got into existence because back then, kings and rulers made palaces and forts made of white marble over there. The main center of attraction is the City Palace at the center of the White city.
Besides this, there are so many more things that you can do:
Watch the dharohar dance at bagore-ki-haveli
This daily evening Live Rajasthani Cultural Show which has regularly been staged since last 19 years is a very popular cultural show showcasing various popular folk dances as well as puppet shows with live music.
Puppet show at Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal
India has a tradition of about 2000 years in puppetry and Rajasthan is the birth place of Indian puppetry. The center has a puppet unit that trains students and teachers in the art of puppetry. Puppets came from a celestial body to entertain masses and regular performances are held in the institute, which run for about 15 minutes. It narrates the historic tales and saga of the great warriors and rulers. The institute also offers courses in puppetry. A group of 25 artistes go on tour, both within India and abroad with a repertoire of puppet shows and various folk dances. The institute has forged at their best to make it a bench mark at an international level.
Visit Shilpgram
A crafts village west of Fateh Sagar, Shilpgram was inaugurated by Rajiv Gandhi in 1989. Set in dusty, rolling countryside, it’s contrived, but remains interesting. There are 26 traditional village houses from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra, some with glittering mirrored interiors, and craft exhibits. Best, though, are the excellent demonstrations by traditional dancers and artisans, with groups ready to perform as you approach. Outside the tourist season, however, Shilpgram can be almost deserted of artisans, performers and visitors. The best time to come is during the mela (fair) in the last 10 days of December: it’s a fantastic spectacle, often with hundreds upon hundreds of artisans and performers from all over India in attendance.
Travel the Udaipur Ropeway
The cable cars ferry sightseers on 4-5 minutes short trips up the hill from Deendayal Park at Doodh Talai to Karni Mata temple. From the cable car, one can see the best views of Udaipur including Pichola Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake, magnificent City Palace Complex, Sajjangarh Fort and landscapes of Aravali mountains on the other side of lake. There is also a viewpoint which is the popular spot for seeing the sunset over the city. Also, at night the lighting done on the different palaces gives a splendid view. The rope-way is located in the heart of the city, so one can get access to the place easily. It is located in the main tourist area and can be best visited in the evenings (at sunset time) followed by mouth watering cuisines served to your taste at very affordable rates at the sunset point atop Machhala Hill.
